They can save time when you want to cross the street on a large intersection. Surprisingly you rarely see them in big cities, except for Japan perhaps. In the UK, crossing the street on a diagonal is called jaywalking, which is also illegal in some states in the US. Why can't the government install diagonal crossings with traffic lights on each end and make it legal to cross on a diagonal? Do you think it should be illegal to cross on a diagonal?
