Need a new job? Work in a bar

If people lose their jobs by the millions and can't find a new one, how and where will they release their despair and frustration? Drinking in a bar for former golden boys or at home for the bronze ones! So, if you have money to invest, invest it in alcohol and wine manufacturers and if you need a new job consider working in a bar!

extend museum hours after 5pm

most museums and galleries in australia close at 5pm during the week. this doesn't make sense because most people finish work just then. it is only after 5pm that they have time to visit during the week. by hiring more staff or temps or switching shifts museums should also stay open after 5pm. otherwise they become mostly used by students or people who can afford not to work and the general public has access to them on weekends when they are at their most crowded. that's not fair!

Robots to fight poverty?

I read this article about this guy named Wu Yulu in China that figured out how to build robots that do the work for him. The amazing part is that the guy has not even finished highschool.

Sometimes I just like to bitch

I hate when I complain about my job, and someone says, "Why don't you look for something else?" I don't want to look for something else. I want to stay in my comfort zone and bitch about this job. And anyway, the economy.

Why do we like quotes so much?

I don't like using quotes when I speak. Sometimes the quote is a good fit but it's not your words, you use it to suggest that you read extensively or just want to impress. The truth of the matter is that most people memorize a few quotes to use and never read the original work. "I feel like quoting from books you haven't read is like wearing the t-shirts of bands you've never listened to." Say you read it from me next time you use it :)

Searching for meaning in Madoff's name...

Once upon a time, it used to be that people acquired their last names after the work they did. If you made bread you were Mr Baker. If you made things from wood you were Mr Carpenter and if you made barrels you were called Mr Cooper. And if, once upon a time, you made off with $50bn of investors' money you took the name Madoff! (pronounced Made-off) Named after the work you do makes sense, doesn't it? :)

Wash-lock restroom logic

Invent a system that would not unlock single restroom doors for employees working in restaurants until water has been run and soap dispensed. This innovation might prove more effective than those 'please wash your hands before returning to work' signs. Sure people could work around the system but it would take just as much time and wouldn't be worth the effort.

Ban metaphors??

I got into an argument by the elevator at my work with a girl from NY. She was rude and said to me 'Honey, you can kiss my ass if you like but what you're asking will never happen' She had a nice ass, so I went behind her, bent down and started kissing her ass on top of her skirt. She shocked and started screaming at me 'What are you doing, get off me, I'll sue you' then I said to her in my Belgian accent, you asked me to kiss your ass so I did. If you don't mean it don't ask for it. You're in Europe and you have nice ass, what do you expect? She can't sue me because she asked for it. See the metaphor trap?

The right to be lazy sometimes..

It's May Day and I'm feeling rather lazy sitting at home with nothing planned for today. Been reflecting about my work. In general, I love what I do but sometimes I get these moments where I feel totally burnt out and just want to lie down and do nothing. Like who doesn't, right? I just want to be lazy but as I question what motivates me to go to work, I wonder if we not only have a right to be lazy but also an obligation. For what if I let myself get totally lazy, so lazy that I feel lazy about being lazy and don't want to be lazy anymore, instead I want to go back to work. It's probably an absurd way to motivate oneself this way but it works. I guess laziness has its merits too :)

How to keep the unemployed busy

Obama is talking of a new Green Economy and governments all over the world spend billions of dollars to spur economic growth. What if all unemployed people were immediately hired to work part-time to clean up the environment? Restore polluted sites, clean up beaches and cities from litter, install renewable energy infrastructure.

They would be paid for their work on top of the unemployment benefit and use their spare time to look for another job. It's better than no work at all and the government can hire them right away.

Reader's Reward

When I buy a book to read, I spend money to buy the author's wisdom, knowledge and thinking process. I reward him for his time and effort. As a reader, however, I also give up my time from doing other activities to read the book. Shouldn't my effort and time also be rewarded? I propose that out of the retail price of any book $1 is discounted at the time of the purchase and the discount is symbolically given the name 'Reader's Reward'. What do you think? Is it fair?

April Serious Day

How about counterbalancing April Fools Day by having another day where everyone is totally serious? People can plan that day for marriage proposals, to fire people at work, to conceive a child on, to find out about their terminal illnesses, to start wars, to break up, to get piercings, to get in a car accident, and all that other serious stuff. Think it will work? A little scary to have a day like that?

Wouldn't be great if we had to work 4 days instead of 5 and have a longer weekend to rest?
